A new invention by Melbourne health workers to prevent them catching
coronavirus from hospital patients has been described as acting like a “pram
cover”.
The new clear plastic “Isolation Hood”
is designed to sit over the top of a coronavirus patient in an intensive care
bed and contain any infectious droplets they may breathe out.
Victoria’s Western Health infectious
diseases head Dr Marion Kainer said the hood acted as a “containment bubble” in
which COVID-19 patients could still breathe, but not pass on the disease
through droplet transmission.
Dr Kainer said within the hood, a patient could have hundreds of
air exchanges while still keeping the air outside the bubble clear.
She said it was a promising invention designed to lower the
infection rate of COVID-19 among health care workers in Victoria as hospitals
fill with hundreds of new cases.
A Western Health video featuring the new invention says “it’s
goign to make people feel safe and it’s going to make patient care better”.
The Isolation Hood will initially be made available in three
hospitals operated by Western Health, including Sunshine Hospital, Footscray
and Williamstown.
