Fuel: a portable digital media library
2TB of mobile
storage, the new LaCie Fuel is big enough to store a family's complete digital
life, but small enough to drop into a bag. With a built-in battery that offers
10 hours' use between charges and with
integrated wi-fi, the portable hard drive is capable of supporting up to five
smartphones or tablets simultaneously. All of which could mean the end of
arguments about which songs to listen to or which movies to watch on a long car
journey or those days when, thanks to the weather, the holiday has been
confined to the hotel room.

Smartphones
and tablets are revolutionizing the way we work and play, but thanks to their
limited storage capacities, we either have to make sacrifices about what
digital content we store on them, or have to look to the cloud for accessing
film and music libraries on the go.
And
when it comes to tablets, very few consumers are yet to be tempted by devices
with 3G or 4G connectivity, making internet access impossible unless using a
wi-fi connection anyway. Then there’s long-distance travel; no one wants
to clock up huge roaming charges for accessing the web via their devices while
on holiday, and on a flight or train connecting to the web in the first place
can be a challenge.
But as well as being great for families,
the Fuel could be the ideal companion for those of us working on the go who
generate a lot of digital content — photographers, journalists and digital
artists — but are limited by the 16-64GB of storage an iPhone or iPad offers.
The LaCie also has some other neat
tricks. It supports Apple’s AirPlay so it can stream content to a TV via an
Apple TV or other supporting device, for example, and has USB 3 connectors so
that it can be plugged directly into a PC or Mac. And it can be configured as a
wi-fi hotspot. That means that devices can conceivably access the internet via
the hard drive — great for places like hotels where wi-fi often isn’t free. Pay
once and split the bandwidth.
The company usually designs its products
with Apple’s ecosystem of products in mind, and while the Fuel is no exception,
thanks to the supporting Seagate Media app, Kindle users and owners of Android
smartphones and tablets will also be able to get just as much use out of it.
As for availability, US consumers can
order the LaCie Fuel 2TB now for $249.99 and the device will roll out
internationally later this month.
